I've been wondering for quite some time now why the smart person is often depicted as a social outcast, regardless of the show in question. I picked 3 characters who fit the profile for this query, as they have similar traits: All three of these characters are intelligent and physically talented (either dancers or martial artists, sometimes both). And they're either depicted as nerds or social outcasts in their respective shows (again, sometimes both). Is there some reason this kind of character can never be the cool/popular person?

I think it goes by the way things used to be in schools where the cool kids lacked the intelligence due to constant socialization and thus no time to study, whereas the smarter kids took the time to study but then lacked the time to socialize with the other students and thus becoming a social outcast.

One of these days, I'd like to see a show that actually turns the formula around, showing the smart/talented individuals as the stars, so to speak.
Casey does mention that she used to attend a private school where academic excellence was admired, so it was quite a shock when she ended up in a public school system and ended up being categorized as a loser.
Bree is an unusual example, she was a covert superhuman and when it's discovered she's not a regular girl, it still doesn't earn her any courtesy. And it gets far worse, because now the entire world is looking down on her, the media is making her globally unpopular because "bad publicity is profitable". They eventually manage to turn it around, but only because her team stops an evil mastermind from taking over the world.
There could be two reasons they make the shows like this: 1. They're just being true to real life, if adding a comedic interpretation. 2. They don't want to offend the "cool person" demographic, so are making a mockery of the smart/talented roles because that will keep their ratings high.
