This is one of my favorite game series.
I've only played Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas though.
Of those two, FNV is the one I enjoyed most.
The premise is in an alternate timeline diverging from the second world war, two major political powers (America and China) destroyed the world in nuclear warfare (this occurred roughly around the year 2150).
But humanity survived and you join the story 200 years after the great war.
The game has a general theme of life in the 1940s era, since that's all the recorded history anyone knows, as more recent historical records have been lost during the war.
Technology is pretty much non-existent, so most civilizations are comparable to shanty towns.
Although some technology still exists, if you know where to find it or the people who own it.
Due to radiation exposure and a mad scientist's experiments, there are mutants everywhere.
Some are nice, some not so much.....
Fallout 3 is about building a machine to purify the water of radioactive contaimination in the Washington basin so it can be drunk safely.
Fallout: New Vegas is a bit of mystery, someone shoots your character, giving them partial amnesia, so you have to figure out eveything without memories.
The Mojave Wasteland is a bit more civilized then the Washington area, as they weren't hit as badly during the war.
The game has a wild west/pioneer theme.
Your goal is to decide the future of the wasteland, by deciding which of the major powers will win (NCR, the Legion, Mr House) or you can take control for yourself.
There will be a Fallout 4, which seems to continue on from FNV, as they have made references to the Mojave Wasteland.
There is some talk about a Fallout mmo coming out sometime, but information is very limited at the moment, not much official has been said, so it's unknown if it's a work in progress or a future project.
